Breon Gilleran grew up in Detroit, Michigan, a gritty, industrial, rust-belt city and the fading locus for automobile manufacturing in the United States. She was raised in a family of artists and began her own formal training at Cass Technical High School, an early prototype for a “magnet” schools for the arts with an enriched art curriculum, but left Detroit in 1967 for California where she was briefly caught up in the counter-culture in San Francisco. In 1978 she moved to Baltimore with her future husband and was able to continue her studies in painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art where she received a BFA in painting in1981. She returned to school, completing an MFA in Sculpture at the University of Maryland in 2002.

Breon has received several honors and awards and is a semi finalist for the Sondheim Awards, 2010. She has exhibited internationally in Beim Handelsmuseum, Bremen, Germany, in 2007 and nationally at the International Sculpture Center, Hamilton NJ, Loveland Museum, Loveland, CO, and Delaware Center for the Arts, Wilmington, DE. Breon is an Assistant Professor of Art and currently teaches part time at Goucher College. She maintains an active studio practice (feel for steel studios) and exhibition schedule, working privately with students and workshops at Area 405 in Baltimore, Maryland.
